23rd April 2006
Work starts preparing the site at Gwinear Road.
Sunday April 23rd 2006 saw a number of Helston Railway Diesel Group (HRDG) members spend the day at Gwinear Road in order to prepare the site for the arrival of the class 103 DMU, now in under a months time!
The Park Royal class 103 DMU will be delivered to Gwinear Road in order for full restoration to be carried out before it is moved to Trevarno. The main reasons for this temporary location being that it has much better facilities for restoring the unit (water, electricity etc) and it will give the Helston Railway Preservation Society more time to get the Trevarno site up to scratch and improve road access.
The DMU will be sited in the old cattle dock at Gwinear Road on private land. Luckily the cattle dock still contains a length of track set in concrete which will provide an ideal location to work on the DMU. However the inset track is not quite long enough to hold the two car set so HRDG members have been working hard to extend the track by adding some sleepers and rail to each end.
On day one of this work the section of track inset in concrete was cleaned up and swept off before work started on laying sleepers at the west end of the dock. This is where we realised how hard laying track by hand is!!
A big thanks to all who turned up on the day, for more photographs see the HRDG's photo gallery here.
